Important Reading

My Mommeh recently bought this book: Not Fit for a Dog! The Truth About Manufactured Dog and Cat Food. (Written by Michael Fox, B. Vet.Med., Ph.D., D.Sc., M.R.C.V.S.; Elizabeth Hodgkins, D.V.M.; Marion Smart, D.V.M., Ph.D.)
After my Mommeh told me what was in this book, I highly recommend it for all cats and dogs. You can learn about the dangers of modern pet food, all about the pet food industry, what caused the 2007 pet food recall, and the best diets for dogs and cats. I think you will be very surprised by some of the things in this book. I learned a lot of things I did not know.
I give this book an enthusiastic paws up! It is not light reading, but I think it is important. Because tummies like good foods.
Here is a link to Not Fit For a Dog! on Amazon in case you would like to read more. I am not using my Daisy Amazon affiliate link because I am not trying to make any moneys. I would just like all my friends to eat healthy foods!

Our Mommy also read Pet Food Politics. It was about the 2007 pet food recall. Mommy was angry, sad, shocked, disgusted and efurryfing else while reading it. We had to calm her down each night.

That looks like a very interesting book. Mom is going to go look at it.

Thank you for that link. I'll have to see if it's at my library. I've lost one cat because of a sudden liver problem and now another is at the vet with diabetes, so I need to know more about how to feed them better.

Thanks for letting us know about that book, Daisy. We think good food and good diet is very important to us kitties, even though we'd like to eat temptations every day, we know that we really shouldn't...

momsbusy said...

thanks for the "no strings attached" recommendation daisy. gotta watch out for the FTC. we will have to check it out. we switched after the pet food recall also. moms reads labels and takes furrever to find stuff that is better for us. she is thinkin of switching again to something like what you and harley are eating.

When we first came to live with mum, she thought all the pet foods were pretty much the same. She started learning a lot from some of the kitties on Catster, and is now obsessed with it. Judging by how much softer our furs are and how much brighter our eyes are, mum can only imagine how much better our insides must be looking. Fui finally lost the weight he needed to, also- something he couldn't achieve on the food recommended by the vet. And the smaller, less stinky poops are good, too!:)

You're a good ladycat to keep the issue in the spotlight.

We have told our Mom to be sure to look into this book. It really looks good and I have heard so many things about what to feed us kitties, it would be nice to have it in a book. Thanks

What a great reading suggestion. Momma wants to improve our food but jane is so picky....so maybe we can try a healthier kitty food. Momma's going to do some research this weekend.

We are "stuck" with Prescription Foods, which makes Mom feel painted into a corner. Gandalf has to have it, so we are all on it. It is very expensive and there is no way to know how well it addresses other issues besides FLUTD.

We know that it has helped Gandalf. We also know that Grayson has LOST weight on it and Whitey and Gandalf have GAINED weight on it. Mom was expecting us all to gain weight so now she's worried why Grayson has lost weight.

We are going to have our mommy look into that! We love happy tummies!!! And, we love looking at pictures of your royal cuteness!!!

We will look that one up. Have you read, do you know how it compares to Pet Food Nation?

My fur-babies eat special food to keep them healthy...Good suggestion.

We agree Daisy, what we feed our pets is an important topic. Human beans should do the reading and find out about what's really in those kibbles and cans! It can be very shocking! Thank you for sharing that book. Also thanks for stopping by our blog!! It's always such a huge honor to know you checked it out. A real celebri-cat, visiting our little blog! It's awesome. Well, now back to the "Toy Olympics", going strong in the family room! Cheers from Pepper & Co.!!

That looks like a very good book - thank you for the link. Our mom has done on-line research on cat food and was so surprised at how bad almost all of the supermarket cat foods are! We only eat the good stuff now. She thinks it's absolutely worth it (and we like the taste!)

The Furry Kids said...

Mom says I eat a lot of things that aren't fit for a dawg, but I'm not quite sure what she's talking about. Kitty box crunchies are super delicious!
Thank you for telling us about this book. Mom says she's going to order it ASAP.

Daisy the Book Reviewer...very cool! If I were to ever get the chance to have a cat or dog then I shall get this book. I can only imagine what is in it!

Mom has read a lot of books on food, but not this one yet. She became obsessed with our food after that horrible pet food scare. Now we eat grain free food (Natural Balance) and Madison and Cecilia are trying out the Merrick Before Grain food and seem to like it. Mom wishes she had the time to cook for us so she would know for sure what's in the food.

I will have to check this book out Daisy. I do think that the food we buy at the store could be better. Toeshee toots and has stinky poos quite often! (TMI?) :)
I read the labels on treat packages very carefully. Billie is allergic to too much wheat gluten, which sadly Temptations is loaded with.
I love the video of you and Harley on the magic carpet! It made my week. You look like you had lots of fun and I bet Mom did too!
Hugs,
Lorianna

Thanks for the info Daisy! We are always concerned with Floyd being sick. We have thought about the raw food you eat (but I admit I am concerned since that it can't sit out if they don't finish it all at once)but the cats are all so picky with food. There is always someone who doesn't like something.

I also like that your mom BOUGHT the book and it wasn't given to her to review by the writer/publisher. We know we can trust it for sure in this case (not that we think anyone would say nice things just because they got something free or anything but it just seems more trustworthy to us).

Thanks for talking about healthy pet food and being such a good example. It's so important and I'm always frustrated when I go somewhere and they're feeding whiskas or whatever grocery brand and can't be convinced that foods are not all the same and it really does matter.
We try to feed the best possible food, and are feeding mostly Wellness right now. I do want to improve their diet though with more canned food, and to look into the raw diet.
I've talked about food to lots of different vets and they are always pushing the junk full of corn gluten meal or saying it doesn't really matter, which is so frustrating. The holistic vet really seemed to care though and did say that she recommends Wellness.

Karen Jo said...

Thank you so much for this timely link. I am thinking about adopting a cat or two and this book may be just what I am looking for to help me decide what to feed them.

Ikaika said...

Brava, Daisy! Important information for all pet parents. Treats are yummy to us, but they are not necessarily healthy. Nor are the foods we eat, even the "special diet" ones the vets sell. Our mom was surprised at the amount of corn in Science Diet cat foods! You have done us all a favor by featuring this book on your blog today. Thank you, Daisy!

One of the first books I reviewed on my website was Foods Pets Die For. Back when it first came out (1997 - I reviewed it in 2004), Ann Martin, the woman who wrote it, was seen as an alarmist, extremist and more than a little crazy. I think it took the pet food recall for humans to start taking note of what is going in our food. I'm glad there's a more recent book out on this topic - thanks for the head's up, Daisy!

Isn't it amazing that you can get a can get a jar of FDA regulated baby food for $1.00US or you can get a can of pet food that contains all sort of substandard ingredients..ash, can you believe it, ash and other type garbage ingredients and also pay $1.00 US.
Are we being ripped off. I think so.
Percy's mum (the Adventures of Percy the Cat blog) is also very knowledgeable about cat foods and has gone to a grain free diet as well. Thanks for introducing us to the book.

I've recently come to loathe commercial foods, period--I definitely want to get that book! Thank you for sharing. :)

Oh, how I wish that Cookie could be switched to a 100% raw like Treader! A rotation diet of Solid Gold, Chicken Soup, Diamond Naturals, healthy meat and vegetable scraps, and a few raw meals a month will have to do for now.

Do you guys eat raw foods?

What a great thing to do; our three cats all eat a special vet diet; poor Dakotah needs it, so all three eat it! It is good for them all.
