Happy Veterans Day Holiday

Yesterday was Veterans Day, and today is the federal Veterans Day holiday.  In honor of the occasion, I am wearing my patriotic skirt.  Why aren't I wearing a top? I do not know.

Anyway, today I want to share something special with you. The man in this picture is my great-great-great-great... grandpa. I call him that because he was really great! He went to the Rainbow Bridge for people a long time ago, but I wanted to share this article about him.

See, for a while in Casper, he was the last surviving veteran of the Spanish-American war! If you read the article, you can see he was a real character.  He attributed his longevity to smoking cigars! My Mommeh says she can still remember him a little bit. I sure wish I could have met him.

Thank You, Veterans

In honor of Veterans Day, I am wearing my most patriotic red, white and blue two-piece suit. I would like to take this chance to thank all of the brave servicemen and -women for selflessly serving our country.

I also want to take a moment and think of my grampa, because I am very proud of the service he provided to our country, even though I never got to meet him. My grampa was a Master Paratrooper. Then he went to Officer Candidate School, and then to flight school. After he got his wings, he went to Vietnam and flew Caribou transport planes. He was very brave and got many medals. My grampa served almost 15 years in the Army, and after he resigned his commission, he became a commercial airline pilot for Western Airlines, and then for Delta Airlines until he retired. This is the flag from his military funeral.

I am wearing my most patriotic outfit, because today is a special holiday where we honor all of our military veterans. Here are some things I learned about this day:

It was in 1938 that Armistice Day was enacted as an official American holiday. But eventually after WWII, citizens felt that the veterans of all wars should be recognized, not just those of WWI. So in 1954 Congress changed the name from Armistice Day to Veterans Day. In America, the holiday now celebrates the approximate 2.9 million U.S. veterans with parades and ceremonies among other events.

I never got to meet him, but my grampa was in the army and flew a C-7 Caribou Transport plane. Here is what the airplane looked like:

The de Havilland Canada DHC-4 Caribou (known in the US military as the C-7 Caribou) was designed as a specialized transport for short takeoff and landing. It was first flown in 1958 and delivery was taken by the United States Army in 1961.

So, today, I would like to thank all of the brave men and women who served our country. Your contribution to our national security is very much appreciated. I thank you for your patriotism, valor, and the sacrifices you made to serve our country.
