I am raising my paw for a good cause!

My new friend Gaius is sponsoring a wonderful contest. It is called "Raise a Paw 2007" and it is all about raising awareness for good causes. I am very proud that we cats can do our part to support causes that are near to our hearts. All you have to do is raise your paw! And then, tell about the special cause that you are supporting. So, I am raising my paw in support of spaying and neutering (this is the same thing as a hooha-ectomy for boycats or a ladygardenectomy for a girlcat).
Here are just a few of the good reasons to support spaying and neutering:
  • To help control cat overpopulation: There are many, many, many cats around the country without a home. This makes me very sad.
  • Health benefits: A spayed female cat has lower risk of developing certain conditions like mammary cancer and uterine diseases. Neutering a male cat can reduce the risk of prostate and testicular cancer.
  • Reduce unwanted behaviors: Cats that have not been spayed or neutered are more likely to mark their territory by spraying urine. This seems a little bit rude! Also, having your cat spayed or neutered will remove their "urges" and make them happier.
My Mommie volunteers three mornings a week at a no-kill cat rescue shelter called Cats Exclusive, so she sees first-hand the number of unwanted cats and kittens there are just in her community. There are always more people wanting to give up a cat than looking for a cat to adopt. Usually there is a waiting list of cats hoping to find a spot at the shelter. Here are just a very few of the many kittens from this kitten season:
And remember that every time a cute little kitten gets adopted, one of the adult long-time residents loses a chance for a Forever home! Even though they never give up hope. Cats Exclusive recently opened a Spay/Neuter clinic in September. This is very exciting news! Here is what the surgery center looks like:
I know it looks a little scairty. But it is really a very quick procedure, and it is for your own good. I hope I have convinced at least one person to spay or neuter their cat! Click on this link to Cats Exclusive to see more photos of the facility. And don't forget to Raise Your Paw for your own special cause!

ps: Here is a bonus photo, an outtake from my Raise a Paw practice session. My Mommie used many, many Temptations to get me to raise my paw. And my Mommie is not very good at wrangling me with one hand, and taking pictures with the other hand. I like to open my mouth like a baby bird until the Temptations get inside.

Bravo Daisy! Great cause and great pose! I have been working on my paw raise too - the more out takes, the more treats (and the more claw marks on Mommies hands!)

This is a great cause. It is very scary being an unwanted kitty and wondering if you will find a forever family. We were so lucky we found our family and that they wanted both of us. We would have missed each other if we had went to seperate families.

We don't even have a scar from when we were spayed. And the very worst thing about it was that Mommy left us at the vet. But she was super sweet to us when she came got us.

You look very cute raising a paw, Daisy. :) You are supporting a very good cause. It is a shame that there are so many unwanted animals and that more people aren't responsible pet owners.

Ramses said...

I have to agree with you for the most part here, it's very important for cats who don't want to be parents to have that special visit to the VET! I'm the proud Dad of 6, but had my visit to the VET just over 2 yrs ago now. After that I got a new home and a proper Mummy! :) Only responsible breeders who know what they are doing should breed cats, that way horrid diseases like PKd can be wiped out! A registered cat breeder has to have any cat they're planning to breed tested for certain diseases within 24 hrs of going off to stud each and every time, this means the kittens are born healthy and fit and don't carry either genetic or communicable diseases! Plus a good breeder will only let a cat breed if they are suited for parenthood emotionally as well as physically. If you want a pedigree cat *only ever go to a registered breeder*!

Thanks for sharing your cause with us Daisy. Lucy and me had our ladygardenectomies, and Bounce had a hooha-ectomy. Your mom is so sweet to help out all those poor kitties who do not have homes yet.

That's a good cause to raise your paw for Daisy! We were shelter kittens, and we got lucky and found a nice forever home, but we worry about all the other kittens that had to stay behind.

What a super duper wunnerful idea, Daisy! All our girls are rescue kitties, and we wouldn't have it any other way!

THAT is a great cause to "Raise Your Paw" for. It is also a very good photo of you raising your paw. But Momma understands about how hard it is for your Momma to try and keep one hand on the camera and one hand in the Temptations bag....

Here, here Daisy! Dat is a furry good thing to raise yoor paw (and awareness) for. Mom is kinda crazy about dis, she actually went and trapped a bunch of da naybors cats and HAD DEM NOOTERED herself when we first lived here. She met a lot of our naybor beans dat way. Now when new beans move in dey get a welcome basket (it includes info on spay/nooter) and mom always asks about pets. We love fotos of you, even yoor outtakes are furry cute.

This is a wonderful cause to Raise a Paw!!! You are so right. There are always more people wanting to dump their cats than there are homes for the adults. Maw's most HATED excuse for dumping a cat, "We're having a baby." She purrsonally would like to FIX those beans. Yup.

Yes Daisy, that's a great cause and I am raising my paw...erm...arm too. There are lots of homeless cats here in the UK too, which is very sad. When it comes time for me to be owned by cats again they will be formerly homeless or unwanted kitties. I took Cybil in because her human's boyfriend didn't get on with her. Sheesh! I'd have got rid of the boyfriend! xxx

Way to go Daisy and Mommie! That's a great raise your paw cause. We are all "fixed." Since Josie, Huggy Bear, and Maggie are all from a mamacat that had very irresponsible owners, our Mom had mamacat fixed also. This is a cause very near and dear to our hearts also.

Good job!

And I am very very proud of your mommy doing, hope these beautiful kittens will find their good home.

That is a great cause! Meowm is still trying to help the strays around our home. The neighbor lady is still feeding them and Meowm is giving her extra bags of food to help. We still have to try and get the TNR program going though....the neighbor lady is wanting the cats adopted and there isn't a program for feral cats to be adopted here....so the best we can hope for is to get them spayed and neutered to no more babies have to suffer.

Tybalt said...

What a great cause, Daisy! My mommy is a firm believer in spaying and neutering. She made sure all of us furry babies were "fixed." You always pose so nicely, Daisy. My mommy said she is jealous. She still hasn't gotten me to raise my paw.

It is so sad how many cats and kittens are out there with no forever homes. We are for spay and neutering too. We raise our paws to the occasion also.

My Mom has a hard time handling us cats and taking a picture too, but your picture didn't turn out as blurry as ours did. Mom and I really like your site, you two are so clever with it. My Mom should take time out and learn how to do different things.

Yes, we have quite a few squirrels around here to help eat the acorns as well as deer too. Dad says that the squirrels have been picky on what acorns to bury as they have many to pick from. He says he has seen them pick some up and put them in their mouths and if it doesn't suit them they spit it out.

Thank you for visiting us regularly.

That's great news. The only way you'll ever get ahead in rescue is by spaying and neutering. One of the groups we foster for has a ticker on their site about the results of neutering a pair of cats. The amount of cats you prevent in a year is staggering. Like you said, kittens are easy to place. The sad thing is that some of them will be right back there when they get older.

Anonymous said...

You are so right Daisy. All of our cats are fixed, and anybody who hangs around the yard and we can get our hands on gets fixed too (I think the neighborhood cats have figured this out, as they don't come around much anymore...especially the ones we caught and fixed). We figure, if they are running free and they aren't fixed, then either they are feral or someone is not living up to their responsibilities, so we live up to them FOR them. Sometimes I really detest human beings.

Those are terrific pictures and a terrific cause to raise your paw. I had the fix at the Humane Society before my Food Lady found me. And she took China Cat to the v-e-t for the fix when she found her under a bush - she was all alone and crying. But we are both happy now in our Forever Home!

Daisy, you are raising your paw for a close to our heart cause! I had my hooha-ectomy when I was 6 months old and had no problem with it. The staff also says that the urine of neutered mancats not so much smells as of not neutered cats.

We love your Mommie for her voluntering job, Daisy!!:)
Mommy Marlene has volunteered for years on the animal ambulance for a national animal protection organization. She has seen so much sad things and that's also the reason the staff gave Soraya a forever home -- dropped at the animal shelter when she was close to 14 years old.

I would think removing a cat's testicles would pretty much make getting testicle cancer impossible.

My cats are too lazy to raise anything.

Do those kittens know they are sleeping in the cat toilet?
