Thank You, Veterans

In honor of Veterans Day, I am wearing my most patriotic red, white and blue two-piece suit. I would like to take this chance to thank all of the brave servicemen and -women for selflessly serving our country.
I also want to take a moment and think of my grampa, because I am very proud of the service he provided to our country, even though I never got to meet him. My grampa was a Master Paratrooper. Then he went to Officer Candidate School, and then to flight school. After he got his wings, he went to Vietnam and flew Caribou transport planes. He was very brave and got many medals. My grampa served almost 15 years in the Army, and after he resigned his commission, he became a commercial airline pilot for Western Airlines, and then for Delta Airlines until he retired. This is the flag from his military funeral.
I also want to share this poem with you:

A Nation's Strength
Walt Whitman
Not gold, but only man can make
A people great and strong;
Men who, for truth and honor's sake,
Stand fast and suffer long.

Brave men who work while others sleep,
Who dare while others fly --
They build a nation's pillars deep
And lift them to the sky.

What a great tribute to those who served our country.
Your grampa sounds a little like my own father. He wasn't a commercial airline pilot but he did earn his wings in the army during WWII.

Hi Daisy, Today is a very good day to remember your grampa. He was very brave. I wish you could have met him.
He got awardies too? that is so wonderful. My daddy's dad was in WW2 and he jumped out of an airplane. My mom's dad did not fight in a war. When he was 20 he got collected in a razzia when he lived in Holland. The Nazi's picked up all able bodied men to clean up their bombed stuff and my dad was taken to Germany, very far north near Poland. When the war ended, he had to walk home. It took him two weeks. When he got home, him mom was very happy.
I am sure if your grampa was here today he would love your blog.

What a wonderfurl post. And, you look beautiful in your patriotic outfit today! Our mom's Grandpa's (RIP) were both in the military. Her paternal Grandpa got a purple heart in Normandy when a landmine blew up right by him. He came home afterwards and she doesn't really remember him all that well, but she does remember he walked with a cane. Happy Veteran's Day!!! ALL of the servicemen/women here today and gone, are all TRUE HEROES!

Oh Daisy, what a beautiful post for this very serious day. You look so pretty in your red, white and blue clothes. I'm so glad that you told us about your Grandfather.

We did not post anything special for Veterans' Day because we had already paid tribute to my grandfather and all other veterans on Saturday.

My grandfather had a military burial too. But my grandmother has the flag in the case, so we could not take a photo of it for our post.

We wanted to comment earlier, but our computer has been naughty today and we could not get online until now.

Mommie is going to write more about Grandfather and what happened to him after the war, but she will not say exactly when she plans to post that. It will be on Anna's and not on my bloggie.

Daisy, this is a beautiful post. I loved reading about your grandpa. Glogirly's dad was a US Marine in WWII. He fought on Iwo Jima. Glogirly has a flag just like you have in your photos. Whenever she looks at it she pauses and smiles. She told me he was and is her hero.

Hi Daisy,

I love the picture in front of the flag box. I think it is really important to remind people of what the true meaning is behind some of our important national holidays.

So many school kids don't know more than that they get a day off from school. They don't realize things like Fourth Of July = Independence Day.

I am glad you are taking the opportunity to thank Veterans everywhere and your grandfather in particular. Mine were both honorable servicemen as well.

Theresa111 said...

What a wonderful post, Daisy. You should take some more shots and make a 2010 Veteran's Calendar. I know many people would love to see Patriotic Daisy. The first pose is especially beautiful.
