How to Grow Some Butterflies
Welcome to my new pets! I know they look like little worms right now, but they are actually butterfly larvae. That's a fancy way of saying caterpillars. Soon, they will change into beautiful butterflies!
In 7 to 10 days, they will turn into chrysalides. Then, I must transfer them to this butterfly garden Habitat. I can hardly wait!
Now comes the important part: reading the instructions. This is just a little boring. But I do not want anything bad to happen to my pets.
The first part has some frequently asked questions (you can click to make it bigger if your eyes are No Good). It says I am Not Allowed to remove the lid and play with the larvae. Oh.
More words! I must keep the caterpillar container upright. There is supposed to be a little bit of silky webbing, and this is a good sign that they are well. I see the webbing! The instructions say the caterpillars will eat and grow many times their original size. This is very exciting!
I am looking inside the Habitat, but nothing is happening. My Mommie says I have to wait until we move the chrysalides in there. This is the boring part.
I will let you know how my pets are doing!
107 Notes for Daisy:
Your new pets look so very exciting, Daisy. Please take good care of them, and we will enjoy watching them grow with you
Sen-Chan & Tom
Oh how many came in the box Miss D? Will you have hundreds of flutterbies or just a few?
Good luck with these ones.
Poppy q
Daisy,
I'm sure you'll enjoy your new pets. Be careful with the habitat when you move them. It looks like your claws could rip right through the netting.
Very cool. Can't wait to see the final results. You must be very excited.
This is very exciting, Daisy! It is a little bit sad that butterfly live such a short life. That makes them all the more beautiful while they are here.
Hey, Daisy - you have the Sass and they have the Frass! hahaha. We did not know that insect poop was called Frass until we read your blog! Professor Daisy is always teaching us something!
That sure sounds exciting. I hope your new pets will be beautiful
~ Girl girl
We are rooting that the butterflies make it. This is a very exciting project Daisy. ~Socks, Scylla & Charybdis

That's quite something. I for one am terrified of flying insects so I won't covet your pets. But the photos of Daisy are priceless - loving the expressions!

Your new pets are so cool. You are going to have so much fun watching them!
Daisy do you know you can't take your new pets for walks or play the bitey and chase game with them?! I had a long lecture on looking after pets after we broked our frogy! :(
Waiting is the most difficult part,
and the most hardest part~!
But I think so far so good,
your pet is alive and moving great~!
This is very exciting. Will you go in your garden with your harness and be able to play with them when they are released?
i would like to do this with you, Daisy, i want to see butterflies come out in a habitat!
You must ask your Mommy to read you the story of The Very Hungry Caterpillar. It will help to pass the time until they turn into butterflies.
oh boy - this looks like fun!
This is so exciting! We are looking forward to seeing the butterflies!
That iz nice, Miss. Daisy. U takez picktures of butterflys whenz they getz to be butterflyz. Please. OK?
Wow! Butterflies! We are going to enjoy watching your new pets grow! Good luck!
Your FL furiends,
How exciting! Your very own pet butterflies! Will you get to play with them?
Daisy - What fun to have your own little pets. Trixie would have a problem with keeping the habitat upright (and in one piece), but we could tie her up and have fun growing butterflies!!
:o) Thomas, Phoebe and Trixie
Hummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm!! I guess it is boring at the beginning because you cannot play with them!!
Maybe when they go into the big container!!!!!!
Purrs Mickey
I can't think of a nicer pet for a kitty. I am so excited for you and can't wait to see them grow.
Purrs, Sukie X

I love butterflies so I hope this works out for you, Daisy. Try to be patient & maybe you'll be rewarded with some real beauties. What will you be doing with them? Setting them free or letting them flutter around the house?
all i know about butterflies is there is a species that looks like a monarch butterfly but is not a monarch. this species mimics a monarach because apparently monarach's taste lousy. so don't eat any monarach butterflies.
This is so exciting! Wonder what color they will be?
Laila and Minchie
Dearest Daisy,
You live the most excitin' life...I mean, what with you havin' butterflies and all. You're my idol, Daisy. I wanna be just like you.
Very truly yours,
Mazie Grace & the Whiskers & Purrs Gang
I am excited miss daisy, do any of them look brave?
Ooh, how exciting watching them grow. Just remember to be gentle with them so they will be your pets for a long time.
I told miss bee what I said and she told me to read her comment... old folks think alike
Aaaaah! My mom is afraid of caterpillars. What a weirdo!
Good luck with them - it will be so fun!
Love Clover xo
This is going to be very exciting! I can hardly wait to see what colors they are!
Those butterflies sure look like fun. But if you can't touch them, then you probably can't taste them, right? Darn.
EG
I can't wait to see the flutterbys (that's what we like to call them in our house) when they're all grown up! What neat pets you get, Daisy!
Oh cool! I can't wait to see how big and pretty your pet butterflies will be.
My oldest stepdaughter likes bug and butterflires. Maybe I should get her one, too!
These pets seem VERY promising!!
Kaze

Oh these look like very exciting pets Daisy!
Butterflies! What fun! I have pets outside at dust. Their little butts light up and that is when I run around chasing them. Have caught a few, but spit them out cause they taste bad and I do not want to hurt them.
Have a good time raising your pets and hope they all survive. Butterflies are so pretty.

I think this will be your most fun and successful pet project yet Daisy! I don't think you can go wrong watching butterflies hatch, then releasing them into the warm Florida sunshine. :)
Thank you for sharing this with us! I can't wait to see!
Hugs To You and Pixie and Mommie,
Lorianna
Oh, we hope yoo haf lots more luck wif deze pets...dey akshooally sound like dey mite be easier den da sea monkeys or da jumping beans. Mom likes were it sez dat dey may lay eggs and what kinda food to give dem when dey hatch...den in da instructions it sez dey may lay up to 500-600 eggs! We don't think dat habitat would be big enuff for even half of dem - 250 flutterbys is a LOT! We can't wait to see dem grow up to be beyootiful flutterbys!
Daisy, you conduct the bestest scientific experiments! We are glad you blog about it because then we all can learn too! The Being Patient part is no fun!!!
Wow...that looks like such fun! Thanks for a great idea. I'm sure my three kitties will love this, too.
Daisy always the inquisitive cat
Having pets is a big responsibility. Good luck!
Pets? More like free range butterfly ranching- are those cruelty free or do you play with your food? ME- I prefer tasty crunchy moths to butterflies...
-Key
Note from Michelle- I just type for her- I don't condone her eating bugs...
I think this is your best project yet! We will enjoy watching them with you.
How is Snail doing today?
~ Maggie Mae
I happen to know that right around the corner from you Daisy, is a place called "Butterfly World". I wonder if they allow kitty field trips? Maybe your mom can sneak you in....
Oh my goodness Daisy that is SO exciting! Will you share where your mommy got these exciting new pets? I'd love to order some for my little cousin who loves animals. :)
This is exciting, Daisy. You find such interesting pets.
Keep the tent away from my sisfur. She wood jump on it and make the butterflies go ded.
I kant wate to see what thay look like!
HOW LONG DUZ IT TAKE UNTIL THEY ARE BIG ENUF SO YOO CAN EET EM RITE UP????
I hope your new pets are still doing well.
I think callapitters will be good pets, Daisy. I'm not sure about flutterbys though.
Your friend
Misty
Are you going to decorate their habitat? We did nots have a fancy home for them as you do, we made one out of an old fish tank and added soil, sticks and the foods they gave us to feed them. OH! Careful not to let a freshly new butterfly by the food, if its really wet it can damage its wings .... We founds this out the hard way :(
wow! what fun! maybe you can plant a butterfly garden right outside the window so your butterflies keep coming back!
this is very exciting.
While you wait for them to grow Daisy, why don't you practice your 'high fives'? This will distract you from wanting to disturb your new pets too much.
Oh Daisy, we can't wait to see how your new pets do. We are so excited to watch them grow with you.
Roxy & Lucky
You will let them free later, right?
wow! that's very exciting:)
We think you are going to have a lot of fun with your new pets. Have you given them names yet?
Tiki, Tavi, Cody and Camie
Daisy, I think this experiment of your new pets will work out better than the last couple - I can feel it!
Oh, I would be so tempted to pounce that habitat. You're better than I am...
--Jasper
(Thanks for checking in on Josie...)
You have learned a lot from the past, Daisy, so I just know you will have success with these caterpillars. Looking forward to seeing the painted ladies!
How many caterpillars do you have?
What are you feeding them?
When I was a teenager, I would bring in monarch caterpillars and feed them milkweed leaves every day, until they became beautiful monarch butterflies! I used a big mason jar - I didn't have a cool butterflyarium like you do!
Hope these work out better than the Sea Monkeys! Um, and the Jumping Beans...
I am so excited for you! I think these new pets are your best ones so far.
I don't know why, but butterfly larvae sound yummy.
Oh wowie kazowie, I'm so ecksited ofur the thought of alla them KATURPILLURS!!! That's gonna be so kool to watch 'em bekome flutterbys! Those sound like furry furry kool pets.
Kittyhugs and purrs from MaoMao!
This is really very exciting! We have an urge to pounce the Habitat, but we'll control ourselves.
Daisy ~ Good luck with your new pets.
How cool, that would be a great gift for my niece when her birthday comes. Very cool idea, I will definately have to try this one out.
It's no fun getting new pets if you can't play with them. Just be a good mama and watch them grow into beautiful butterflies!
Hmmmm. That cage looks like it would be a lot of fun to get in to.
Tell your friends about the gift exchange
This is soooo exciting Daisy! I'm looking forward to seeing you new butterfly pet. What a great surprise in the package!
OHMIGOSH!
How exciting, can't wait to see what happens.
Ooo ... Flutterbies are COOL! Good luck with 'em (an' don't eat 'em).
DMM
Fun!!
Hopefully you take better care of them then you did your jumping beans!! lol
Daisy, will you take them strollering when they get bigger?
What a fun project! Good thing you read the instructions or the larvae might have been in some unfortunate accident. I'm sure it will get boring soon.
Oh, it's going to be so much fun to watch what happens!
Daisy, did you know that those little caterpillars are called "instars"? Did you also know that caterpiller poop is called "frass"? My mom and I raised Swallowtail Butterflies last year and I am an expert! But I did not get to catch any and play with them. Rats!
I shared your adventure with my daughter who came home from camp recently with moth are in a jar. When she learned that it was not going to be a butterfly, her little heart as broken. When she looked up the moth on the internet and saw how uncute it will be she became afraid of it and decided to set it free before it started to cocoon. Now she can live the adventure through you. Thanks for sharing.
OMDawg! How totally kyool is all of this???
Luf, Us
What a wonderful project. You get to have pet caterpillars, then you get to have pet butterflies. Twice the fun!

Those are amazing to watch! I use to grow them all the time when I was little. I'd love to watch them hang upside down then go into a cacoon, then hatch!
You babies will love to watch it also.
