How to Grow Some Butterflies

Welcome to my new pets! I know they look like little worms right now, but they are actually butterfly larvae. That's a fancy way of saying caterpillars. Soon, they will change into beautiful butterflies!
In 7 to 10 days, they will turn into chrysalides. Then, I must transfer them to this butterfly garden Habitat. I can hardly wait!
I hope the Habitat is big enough for them. How big do butterflies get, anyway? We will find out!
Now comes the important part: reading the instructions. This is just a little boring. But I do not want anything bad to happen to my pets.
The first part has some frequently asked questions (you can click to make it bigger if your eyes are No Good). It says I am Not Allowed to remove the lid and play with the larvae. Oh.
More words! I must keep the caterpillar container upright. There is supposed to be a little bit of silky webbing, and this is a good sign that they are well. I see the webbing! The instructions say the caterpillars will eat and grow many times their original size. This is very exciting!
I am looking inside the Habitat, but nothing is happening. My Mommie says I have to wait until we move the chrysalides in there. This is the boring part.
I will let you know how my pets are doing!

Daisy,

I'm sure you'll enjoy your new pets. Be careful with the habitat when you move them. It looks like your claws could rip right through the netting.

Henson Ray said...

Very cool. Can't wait to see the final results. You must be very excited.

This is very exciting, Daisy! It is a little bit sad that butterfly live such a short life. That makes them all the more beautiful while they are here.

Hey, Daisy - you have the Sass and they have the Frass! hahaha. We did not know that insect poop was called Frass until we read your blog! Professor Daisy is always teaching us something!

I love butterflies so I hope this works out for you, Daisy. Try to be patient & maybe you'll be rewarded with some real beauties. What will you be doing with them? Setting them free or letting them flutter around the house?

Dma said...

all i know about butterflies is there is a species that looks like a monarch butterfly but is not a monarch. this species mimics a monarach because apparently monarach's taste lousy. so don't eat any monarach butterflies.

Butterflies! What fun! I have pets outside at dust. Their little butts light up and that is when I run around chasing them. Have caught a few, but spit them out cause they taste bad and I do not want to hurt them.
Have a good time raising your pets and hope they all survive. Butterflies are so pretty.

Oh, we hope yoo haf lots more luck wif deze pets...dey akshooally sound like dey mite be easier den da sea monkeys or da jumping beans. Mom likes were it sez dat dey may lay eggs and what kinda food to give dem when dey hatch...den in da instructions it sez dey may lay up to 500-600 eggs! We don't think dat habitat would be big enuff for even half of dem - 250 flutterbys is a LOT! We can't wait to see dem grow up to be beyootiful flutterbys!

Are you going to decorate their habitat? We did nots have a fancy home for them as you do, we made one out of an old fish tank and added soil, sticks and the foods they gave us to feed them. OH! Careful not to let a freshly new butterfly by the food, if its really wet it can damage its wings .... We founds this out the hard way :(

Mr. Hendrix said...

wow! what fun! maybe you can plant a butterfly garden right outside the window so your butterflies keep coming back!

this is very exciting.

You have learned a lot from the past, Daisy, so I just know you will have success with these caterpillars. Looking forward to seeing the painted ladies!

Mo and The Purries said...

How many caterpillars do you have?
What are you feeding them?

When I was a teenager, I would bring in monarch caterpillars and feed them milkweed leaves every day, until they became beautiful monarch butterflies! I used a big mason jar - I didn't have a cool butterflyarium like you do!

Hope these work out better than the Sea Monkeys! Um, and the Jumping Beans...

Daisy, did you know that those little caterpillars are called "instars"? Did you also know that caterpiller poop is called "frass"? My mom and I raised Swallowtail Butterflies last year and I am an expert! But I did not get to catch any and play with them. Rats!

I shared your adventure with my daughter who came home from camp recently with moth are in a jar. When she learned that it was not going to be a butterfly, her little heart as broken. When she looked up the moth on the internet and saw how uncute it will be she became afraid of it and decided to set it free before it started to cocoon. Now she can live the adventure through you. Thanks for sharing.
