About Harley...

Today I am going to tell you some things about Harley. This is going to be a long story, so you might want to get a snack to eat while you are reading. Or else just look at the pictures. But remember, there could be a quiz later! Some of these things are a little confusing, so my Mommie helped me write it.

If you who follow me on Twitter, you might already have heard about some of Harley's issues. Since I am a little bit worried about him, I think now might be a good time to tell you about Harley's medical odyssey.
Harley was borned at the shelter to a feral cat who was brought in to be spayed and released. The Mamacat turned out to be very pregnant, and gave birth! She was then spayed and released, while her kittens went to foster care. Harley (his name then was Neptune) was one of that litter! When he was big enough to live at the shelter and look for his new home, he got a very bad case of ringworm! He had that for many weeks, but eventually got better. Here he is snuggling at the shelter.
When Harley came to live with me, he seemed to be in good health. My Mommie took him to have a check up, and learned all about good nutrition. Harley and I eated a high-quality grain free food. If you are interested, it is called EVO Cat and Kitten food. All seemed well for a while. Then Harley got some sores on his lip. I found this picture that shows the very first sign of Harley's problem. If you look closely, you can see the beginning of his first lip ulcer here.

Harley had to go back to the doctor's office, and he got a shot of Depo-Medrol. We both started eating from stainless steel or ceramic food dishes. No plastic bowls for us! Harley's sores went away in about 2 days and we were very happy! Then, the lesions came back again in a few weeks and Harley had to get another shot of Depo-Medrol. The sores are called "rodent ulcer" or "indolent ulcer" or eosinophilic granuloma complex (EGC).

He also was re-tested for FIV and FeLV, just to be safe. He tested negative, and we were happy again! Harley also started taking an immune-boosting supplement because it seems his immune system is not working just right.
Harley's ulcers came back for a third time just a few weeks later! He had his third and final shot of Depo-Medrol and switched to a diet of venison in case his problem was caused by an allergy to chicken. Harley had a complete blood workup, and found to have elevated eosinophils, indicating an allergic or inflammatory reaction. He also started taking an Omega-3 Fatty Acid supplement, because some cats respond to that. Sometime in December, Harley started to get a very bad case of feline acne. So my Mommie washes Harley's chin very carefully twice a day with Hibiclens.

Just yesterday, my Mommie saw that Harley is getting patches of hair loss now! Oh noes! Here you can see the patch of missing furs on his neck. If you look closely you can see a little bit of the acne along his jawline. Oh Harley!
The doctor took a sample of Harley's furs to culture for ringworm. My Mommie has to put Miconazole on Harley's bald patches! Luckily, Harley's appetite is still good!
And Harley still wants to play, play, play all the time! Here he is acting silly. When Harley first got the ulcers on his mouth, he would sometimes gag and regurgitate his foods, but he has been eating much better now.
Harley, are you okay down there? I hope you get all better soon. You might be a pesky little brother, but you are MY little brother and I love you a lot.
I might have made some mistakes telling this story because I am not an expert. I just tried my best.

Oh goodness what a lot of problems Harley has been having... It's not easy keeping a cat with long term health problems in remission we know this from My Mummy's work with Tigmut'hep's FLUTD. She says her old cat Socrates had cat acne issues too and that was the result of a food allergy she eventually found and cured it. This is why My Mummy is so fussy with our food!

Oh I hope Harley's problems go away soon. It is good though that he has a good appetite and enjoys playing. I regurgitate my food too sometimes, maybe two to three times a week but the vet just said it was because I eat too fast. Karen thinks there is more to it but I don't know.

We're sorry Harley has some issues...Ernie has some problems like that too...he gets the mouth sores...we have figured out that his problems may be season related...he gets them in the spring and fall mostly. Ernie eats the limited ingredient foods (venison & peas)just in case it's food related. Ernie also has occasional problems with sores on his paw pads...which are also probably allergy/immune system related. We have been lucky with Ernie...his problems are infrequent and he doesn't seem bothered by them much so we treat with diet only.

We hope that his problems get under control...sounds like he's getting great care from you, Daisy!

RJ Flamingo said...

Awwww! Poor Harley! It's good that he has a good appetite - it always seems that when a kitty's not feeling well, the appetite and not wanting to play are the first signs. So, hopefully it's not real serious.

With a good nurse like you looking after him, I know Harley will be all better soon!

Karen said...

Miss Ed has had feline acne all her life. We use steel/glass feeing and watering dishes but it didn't really help her. I also clean her chin, but not with the dedication your mommie does Harley! Miss Ed has diabetes, so the vet thinks she may have some immunity issues. The acne doesn't seem to bother her, and it hasn't become open sores or anything, so we just take care and keep watch. I know with all the love and care he is getting, Harley's problems will get better!

That was a really cute picture of him when he was a kitten! He looks just like his mama!

Harley and my sister Jonesie have lots in common. What she has is rodent ulcers too. When she was younger, she used to get the puffy lips, and sometimes her issues come up as irritable bowel syndrome and now she doesn't get the puffy lip, she gets awful scabs on her back and chin. She used to get cortisone shots on a regular basis, but the dr. is afraid she will develop diabetes so now they are having my mom give her prednisone pills and play with the lowest dose she can handle and keep the problems away. She is now on Duck and Green pea food (we are All on it thanks to Jonesie!)...and we are still trying to figure it out. This has been going on for as long as we have know her...since she was adopted in 2002. We haven't tried immune boosting supplements but I think it's a good idea. She has a new dr. now and we are going to talk with them about it. Good luck to Harley. Jonesie sends him purrs and headbutts!

You did a good job of telling us about Harley's problems Daisy.

We found with Gerry's issues that Depomedon (uk version, same drug) just didn't last the full six weeks and we weren't keen on the link to diabetes either. He's now on daily Interferon and that has kept his mouth clear of sores (his were Calici not EGC but it makes his immune system work hard in the mouth area) Our vet has talked about using Interferon in EGC when everything else has failed and has seen some success with it. Has Harley had a viral swab done? this might pinpoint if there's a viral cause behind the EGC breakouts.

We wish you the best of health Harley, you have a very good family working hard to fix you up so you can be well again.

My typist knows something about ringworm because she got it into the house too, a few years before I was born. She had 2 cats and a litter of 10 weeks old when she found out (Ralph was one the litter.) Only the kittens had little patches of missing furs, on their neck and legs.

They were treated by the VET for about four weeks and additionally Marlene used Molkosan on the the affected skin until the furs fully were back. In the meantime the kittens were eating, playing and growing like every other young cat their age. They became better and were never affected by ringworm again.

Daisy, I think your Mommie told you this... Most of the time only kittens (also young adults) and old and not-so-healthy cats are affected because they have less resistance. Harley is a healthy young mancat, with the best care, and I am sure he will be all better very soon!!

We hope Harley starts doing better soon. My mommy's first cat Buffy had feline acne, but it cleared up pretty good and never came back. We are glad he is playful.

I see you care deeply for Harley, thats great--I've had cats over the years, but primarily a dog person. I have a dog now that acts like a cat. Very independent and stubborn. Typical for the breed--a shihshu.

It seems like poor Harley has been through a lot in his little life. Its a good thing he has you Daisy and your Mommie to help him get better. I am sure he will be well taken care of in your very loving home.

PS-where did you get that cat stand toy thing-a-ma-bob? That is REALLY NEAT and we want to ask our Muth-er for one now!

Purr-rayers for Harley,

Love Sasha and Theodore

Daisy, Do not worry. Instead go here with your Mommie and light candles foe Harley. they last two days and you can visit to see them burning lower each time. http://www.gratefulness.org You may invite others to go there and say a prayer for Harley, too. Together we can concentrate on his improvement.
As for the acne, My Mommie takes a fine-tooth flea comb (the smallest one) and combs under Christy's chin and get all of the blackheads gone, then she washed it and put triple antibiotic ointment on. Christy ended up wiping it away, so Mommy learned to rub it in, and then wipe away the excess. Now almost completely gone.
Cosmo and I had the same thing a few years ago, and Mommy made it disappear.
We are going to pray right now.

Love,

Bobby

We hope Harley feels better soon, and that we find out what's causing everything. Jeff is very concerned about his friend.

p.s. Bogdan gets acne, too. Even when he has good bowls.

Oh, we hopes Harley is OK. LT (Dobby) had ringworm and it is difficult to get rid of, but eventually we managed with a very strict treatment regiment. At least is seems that he is feeling OK.

You have a lot of comments here, not sure if this has been said, but maybe an antihistamine would help Harley? We take something (Mom got it without purrscription but the V-E-T prescribed it) similar to benadryl (if you want Mom can help us read the label when she gets home from Dayhunting) every day for our sneezing, and maybe that would work better than his steroid.
